Student-Led Conferences

Student-led conferences are designed to allow students to take the lead role in showing what they have learned and reflect on their growth over the school-year.  CES held our first session of student-led conferences the past week and were extremely pleased with the results.

Fourth and fifth grade student-led conferences.
Student-led conferences are certainly not the only way you will be learning about your child's progress throughout the year.  Traditional parent-teacher conferences will be held in October and you are welcome to request a conference at anytime.

Sixth graders sharing their work in the Computer Lab.
Seventh graders sharing their work.

We appreciate the support from our parents as we stepped outside of our comfort zones and tried something new.  We believe student-led conferences gave our students voice and responsibility in their learning.  The feedback you provided was extremely helpful and we are looking forward to continuing with these conferences again next spring.

Visit from Morgan Griffith

Check Elementary seventh graders had a special guest last week - United States Congressman Morgan Griffith.  Griffith represents Floyd and surrounding areas in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Students had written some thought-provoking questions for the Congressman and appreciated Representative Griffith taking time out of his busy schedule to visit CES.

Here is a sampling of their questions:

Do you always get along with the people that you work with?
How do you feel about the proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline?
Did you attend the State of the Union Address, and if so, where did you sit?
How do you feel about Obamacare?
What are your thoughts on free community college?
How can we do more to protect the environment without spending a lot of money?
Would you ever consider running for President?

Representative Griffith encouraged students to stay informed of current events by watching the news and to carry out their civic duty at the polls.

Literary Magazine

Several of our seventh graders put together a small literary magazine showcasing their talents.  Although the first edition is not lengthy, we are proud of the students who submitted work.  Enjoy!
