Playing in the Dirt

It was a "groundbreaking" week at CES as Jason Rutledge and his Suffolk Punch draft horses came to plow up our garden space.

Our efforts to start a community garden began last year and started gaining momentum this summer when teachers and members of our community met to put conversation into action.  The fall plowing allows the sod time to decompose and we will be ready to disc and plant in the spring.

Our students are excited about the opportunity to grow food for our cafeteria and the greater Check community.  Their wish list of crops is quite extensive and even includes an orchard.  Some are even looking forward to pulling weeds and all are looking forward to playing in the dirt.

We plan to start small, possibly with just a crop of potatoes so that the students can be involved in both the planting and harvesting during times when school is in session.

Stay tuned to our social media accounts for updates on the process.  If you are interested in helping with our efforts, please reach out to Katie Thomas, our sixth and seventh grade Science Teacher and school contact for our garden effort.

Farm to School Program

The Farm to School Program was recently featured on WSLS Channel 10.  We welcomed the film crew to CES last week to highlight the many benefits of bringing local products to our school cafeteria.

Miss the footage on the news?  Check it out online!

Stay tuned to this blog for more information about the Farm to School Program as well as our efforts to create a community garden here at CES.  We are hoping to break ground before the month is over!

New Playground Equipment

We are so grateful to the Check Elementary PTA and the Floyd County Public Schools Maintenance Department for purchasing and installing our new playground equipment!

We have four new swings:

And several new benches!

Our students, teachers, and the greater CES community have already been enjoying the new additions to our grounds.  THANK YOU!
